Co Tu
There are more than 61,500 Cotu people (2009) in Vietnam. They have inhabited in mountainous areas in Quang Nam and Thua Thien-Hue provinces for a very long time. There are also around 30,000 Cotu people in Sekong (Laos). Cotu language belongs to Katuic group under Mon-Khmer Language Group. Cotu people follows patrilineality.
The Cotu relies on upland field. They burn land and prick holes and apply seeds for planting crops. Their traditional village is defensive with fence surrounding. The biggest community house is the central of the village and surrounded by villagers’ houses.
The Cotu believe that there are many devils and gods. Therefore, they organize many ceremonies and taboos in hunting, cultivation, housing, treatment, etc. Buffalo sacrifice is the biggest ceremony of Cotu community.
